Should I buy a flute or rent one first?
I’m just starting the flute again but it’s term 2 and I was suppose to enrol in flute lessons at school at the beginning of the year. Should I get tutor and possibly rent a flute… or buy a flute and try to get back on track with my old music sheets and instruction booklets before starting lessons…?
My teacher might tell me it’s too late, if that was the case, should I find a tutor outside of school or practice on my own?

The flutes that are provided for rental are usually shiny and STURDY, to look nice and survive abuse – but are HARDLY the best-sounding or easiest to play! You best bet it to contact a flute teacher first) you said tutor – Brit??) They can help you find a decent USED flute of a good brand – which will be better for you, and FAR cheaper than renting. When dealers say that rental money is applied to future purchase, they base this is the wildly inflated MSRP, or full (sucker) price – NOT what they give as a *discounted* (real) price to people who walk in to buy an instrument. Used instruments are all over, and even after you take it to a good repair shop, the total you spend will be a better investment than renting. Have your teacher assist you – there are also GARBAGE flutes everywhere, too. Good luck!
I would advise renting one first, just in case you change your mind about wanting to continue lessons, but if you’re certain it’s what you want to learn then buy one.
If your tutor tells you it’s too late you could find another tutor, practicing on your own is useful but you won’t have the same guidance as having a tutor.
If you are just starting, rent. Then, after a few months to a year, if you still want to stick with it, buy one. It seems like it would be beneficial to get a tutor to bring you up to speed on everything that you missed.
You should probably start out by purchasing a (used?) flute. If you rent a flute for approximately a year, the money spent is equal to buying one. Thus, you should probably buy an $800 flute, try it out, and if you don’t like it, sell it back.
