What flute brand would you suggest for an intermediate flute player (4-5 yrs)?
I am a freshman in high school, and I have been playing flute since fourth grade. I have been playing the same flute since sixth grade, and my teacher recently suggested upgrading my student flute to a better model. I currently am playing an Armstrong. I’m looking for a French flute (open holes) with an offset G and a silver headjoint, preferably within 00. Any suggestions?

I’m currently playing a Yamaha closed-hole…I’ve been playing for about the same time as you, and with recommendations from my flute teachers, I’m planning on buying the YFL-461 (around $1600).
I’ve heard that Pearls are fairly good, considering price, (I used to have a Pearl), though the flutes tend to sound a bit high. I never noticed that on my flute though.
What I would suggest is buying a Yamaha, or other well-known brand. You could take a look at the following open-holed Yamaha flutes on wwbw.com:
Yamaha YFL381, $944, sterling silver head and plated body/footjoint, inline G though.
Yamaha YFL-281 Student Flute, $973, silver plated flute with offset G, comes with a $200 gift card to wwbw.com
Since you’re an intermediate player, getting a sterling silver flute would be best – just the headjoint at least if you can’t afford the whole sterling silver flute.
I would also suggest asking your flute teacher if you have one, or your band director for suggestions!
Hope that helps!
look at gemeinhardt flutes, go for an open hole type with silver(not silver plate)
selmer has some nice flutes for advancing students also!
There’s three brands I particularly like:
Emerson
Yamaha
Pearl
All three of these brands offer a wide variety of options, including ones in the price range you’re looking for. Yamaha tends to run just a little more pricey than the others for the same features.
What you choose will depend on your style of playing, and how that particular flute suits you. I’d recommend playing quite a few brands to see which one responds best for you.
I would suggest getting a sonare- its a low end version of powell. They have a handcut headjoint and as you may know, the headjoint plays a key role is the sound you produce. Also consider Azumi or Amadeus flutes- they are lower ends of Altus and Haynes flutes with handcut headjoints as well. I haven’t tried the last two types, but the headjoints on the high end flutes are amazing.
Well, whatever you do.. do NOT get a Geimenhardt. The quality of sound is horrid, especially when compared to an Armstrong. I played on a student model closed hole Armstrong through out high school. The sound was so rich and beautiful, I won so many competitions and received principal flutist of any and every honors orchestra and band…. traveled out of state to compete… all on a student model Armstrong. My instructors were amazed of the tone that I got out of that flute. I decided to upgrade to an open-hole, gold lip mouth piece, Gemeinhardt flute and it was the biggest mistake ever. For example, when you play the low register, the notes are not deep and dark as such on an Armstrong. It goes out of tune too easily, etc etc etc. So I decided to purchase another beat up student model Armstrong flute and am pnow erforming professionally with it =) I can’t afford anything else right now. I really want a Pearl Pro…. but they are really expensive..

Have you considered Trevor James? I have several students who bought them and LOVE them. I also recommend Sonare (made by Powell) and Amadeus (made by Haynes).
The best way to decide is to play the flute. You should chose one that you sound good on and still have room to grow. Try playing the flute on a variety of music (etudes, technical tongued passages, lyrical lines) and in all octaves.
There is an excellent article on buying flutes on Jeff Weissman’s web site under the section titled "buying". I recommend reading it. (www.jbwflutes.com).
I would equal to add your journal to my blogroll gratify bowman me what mainstay should I use?
