What's a good beginner flute I can buy?
I’m a violinist and so whatever knowledge I have about musical instruments is limited to strings–I know absolutely nothing about woodwind instruments.
So, to make a long story short, I’m interested in learning the flute but I have no idea what student flutes are reputable and durable. I’m willing to spend up to 0.
Can anybody help me? Thank you so much for your help!

Look on http://www.fluteworld.com – if a brand is represented there, it is reputable. Then see if you can find it used. Every day, you can find some decent Emersons on eBay – I think I have ten of them here, that I am getting fixed for next year’s beginner flute students, or kids that need a cheap flute for marching. INCLUDING what I pay for repairs, i am selling these for $150 or less – this is not an ad, since I will not tell you who I am or where I am – this is just so you know what is possible.
It depends what kind of sound you really want. My student flute was an armstrong flute, model 102. I my parents spent about $540 on it though. Its a really good flute, you can probably get a used one for cheaper though.
Honestly, I’d NEVER buy a flute without playing it first. When I was getting a new flute, I was playing two different flutes of the same model, and they sounded different! (and no, it wasn’t just because it wasn’t in tune, the tone was different). If you’re going to buy a new student flute, you’d probably end up going towards $500. I bought a used one that was $200-$300 dollars. So, maybe try going to some music stores that sell used instruments and also stores that sell new instruments. Tell them your price range, and they’ll help you. However, keep in mind that if you buy a used flute, it might need worked done, like new pads. And do not at all be afraid to play as many flutes as you want! You want to be sure you picked the right one!
